What is the Versatility Ranch Horse Event?
The American Quarter Horse Association Versatility Ranch Horse event
promotes the athletic ability and versatility of the working ranch horse in five
categories: working ranch horse, ranch riding, ranch trail, ranch cutting, and ranch
conformation.
Ranch Riding
This class demonstrates the horse’s ability to move at a working speed in three gaits,
walk, jog, and lope.
Ranch Trail
This class contains a minimum of six obstacles and is designed to show a horse’s
ability and willingness to perform several tasks that might be asked of him during the
course of a day’s work.
Ranch Cutting
A single numbered cow is cut from a herd and the horse must demonstrate its ability
to work a cow. The horse and rider must then pen the cow at the far end of the arena.
Working Ranch Horse
This class combines the ability of the working ranch horse to rein, handle cattle, and
put its rider in a position to rope and stop a cow.
Ranch Conformation
The goal of the conformation class is to preserve the American Quarter Horse type by
selecting well-mannered horses based on their resemblance to the breed ideal.
What’s the RMQHA Versatility Ranch Horse Program All About?
Our Mission Statement:
“ To promote the versatility ranch horse and facilitate personal achievement through
education and competition”
The Rocky Mountain Quarter Horse Association has adopted this great event
as a center piece for its Educational and Recreational Riding Programs. The Program
offers a wide range of educational riding clinics and recreational competitions open to
all levels of riders and all breeds of horses. While one of the main goals of the
program is to prepare riders to compete in American Quarter Horse Association
sanctioned ranch horse events, the primary goal is to improve horsemanship skills
and have fun doing it!
Recreational All-Breed Competitions and AQHA Special Events: What’s the difference?
• AQHA Versatility Ranch Horse Special Event
This is an American Quarter Horse Association sanctioned event that requires
the horse to be a registered American Quarter Horse and the rider to hold an
AQHA membership, AQHA Amateur or Novice Amateur membership, or an
American Quarter Horse Youth Association membership to compete. National
AQHA points are earned and are applied towards qualification for the AQHA
World Championship Versatility Ranch Horse Event.
The Rocky Mountain Quarter Horse Association, as the official Colorado
affiliate of the AQHA, can approve AQHA VRH Special Events held in Colorado
for RMQHA year-end points and awards. To be eligible for RMQHA points and
awards (or Rocky Mountain Quarter Horse Youth Association points and awards)
the rider/owner of the registered American Quarter Horse competing in the event
must have an RMQHA individual Youth, Open, or Amateur Membership.
(Note: RMQHA Family Memberships are not accepted for year-end RMQHA
points and awards for AQHA/RMQHA sanctioned VRH Events.)
• RMQHA Versatility Ranch Horse Program “Recreational All-Breed
Competitions”
This is part of the RMQHA Recreational and Educational Versatility Ranch
Horse Program and is open to all skill levels of riders and all breeds of horses. The
Recreational All-Breed Competition can be held as a stand alone event, combined with a
clinic, or held in conjunction with an AQHA VRH Special Event. Points earned in these
competitions are applied towards special achievement recognition awards. To be eligible
for these awards the rider must have at least an RMQHA Family Membership.
The RMQHA recreational all-breed competitions are American Paint Horse Assn. PAC
Program approved.
The Golden Remuda Program
The Golden Remuda is a Stallion Stakes Futurity to encourage the breeding and
ownership of AQHA versatility ranch horses. Stallion owners donate their ranch horse
stud fees for owners to breed and build their own futurity ranch horse prospect. The
futurity horses are shown at the Silver Jubilee in October. Golden Remuda Classes are
such fun to watch! Contact the RMQHA office for details and how you can be involved.
